Reptile. adj. de tout genre. Qui rampe, qui se traisne sur le ventre. Il n'a guere d'usage que dans le dogmatique. Animal reptile. insecte reptile.
Il est plus ordinairement substantif, & alors sous ce nom on comprend non seulement tous les animaux qui n'ont point de pieds, & qui rampent effectivement; mais generalement aussi tous ceux qui semblent se traisner sur le ventre, quoy qu'ils ayent des pieds. Dans la premiere acception on dit proprement, que Le serpent est un reptile, que le ver est un reptile. Et dans la seconde, on dit aussi d'un lezard, que C'est un reptile.
